Music and imagery is an approach involves exploring and expanding consciousness, through focusing on the experience emerges while actively listening to music.
Some people may experience journeys of imageries that developed with the music, some people may have specific sensations such as changes of temperature, new smells, and/or embodied feelings. These experiences can help the client to, for example, deeper understanding of self (personal growth), manage anxiety, increase resilience, build inner resources, and promote a sense of transformation and wholeness.
MI sessions are also suitable for people who want to work with Issues such as trauma, grief, anxiety, addiction, and major life changes.
Music and Imagery is an umbrella term that covers many different methods or approaches such as The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), Resourced-Oriented MI, and Issued-Oriented MI.
The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music is a music-centered, consciousness-expanding therapy developed by Helen Bonny. Therapists trained in the Bonny Method choose classical music sequences that stimulate journeys of the imagination. Experiencing imagery in this way facilitates clients’ integration of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of well-being.
– Association for Music and Imagery –
The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) was evolved as a method through the research and practice of Helen L. Bonny, Ph.D. In GIM, the client may goes into an alternated state of consciousness, which allowed them to explore deeper into their mind.
In the UK, a qualified GIM practitioner is required to complete three levels of rigid training to practice and deliver GIM sessions.
Currently, we only offer Supportive Music & Imagery, also known as Resource-Oriented Music & Imagery, sessions at Astar Music Therapy | Scotland.
